What kind of rockets do we fly?

We fly all kinds of rockets. From small rockets you can buy off the shelf of your local hobby store to massive rockets that take months to build and require formal FFA wavers to launch. We’ve built rockets from crayon piggy banks, Halloween themed sippy cups, and empty wire spools. We’ve built high-tech wonders with cameras, GPS trackers, and miniature flight computers using carbon fiber airframes and custom machined aluminum bulkhead. Below are some general descriptions of the kind of rockets you can expect to see at our next launch. If there’s something you’re interested in that you don’t see below, please contact us, it could be that we fly it!

Low Power/Model Rockets

This is the place where most rocketeers begin their journey. Often these small rockets come as kits that can be put together quickly, have a motor loaded into them, and then launched all in the same day… Sometimes in the same hour. These rockets typically fly on small motors (1/4 A to D) and can reach altitudes of several hundred feet—some much higher. These are great rockets for beginners to hone their rocket building skills, or for long time flyers to launch for the fun of the hobby. Learn more about Model Rockets on the NAR website.

Mid Power

Once a rocketeer has a little more experience under their belt they usually opt to up the challenge by building a mid-power rocket. These rockets have larger motors (E-G) and can climb thousands of feet into the sky. These rockets require a little more skill to assemble, but can be put together in a weekend and flown soon after.

High Power

High power rocketry is the next logical step for those who want to launch bigger faster rockets, capable of flying tens of thousands of feet high and traveling faster than the speed of sound (767mph). This is the most challenging area of rocketry requiring advanced building techniques and requiring weeks or months to assemble. Open to rocketeers 18 and older, high-power rocketry requires certification through NAR (the National Association of Rocketry). There are three levels available to rocketeers—each allowing them to fly bigger and more powerful rockets. Level 1: H-I motors. Level 2: J-L motors. And Level 3: M motors and beyond. If you’re interested in high power rocketry, OKC Rocketry can help get you certified and take your rocketry to the next level! Learn more about High Power Rockets on the NAR website.

Club Builds

Club Builds are a great way for new or inexperienced rocketeers to learn the skills necessary to build rockets capable of withstanding the rigors of a 10,000 ft. flight exceeding the speed of sound. Through club builds you’ll learn the tips and techniques of more experienced flyers who’re eager to share their knowledge and love of rocketry.
