Rick Bolin

When did you get started in Rocketry?

I was introduced to amateur rocketry by my 6th grade science teacher, Mac Smith. We had a class project to build, fly, and track small rockets.; mine was and Estes Mosquito.

How long have you been building model rockets?

I took up the hobby in earnest while going to school at OSU. I was poor and would from time to time need a creative break from studying graphic design. Estes rockets were inexpensive and fun to build.

What rocket did you fly (or plan to fly)  for your Level One?

I flew an Estes Leviathan on a 29mm H180 White Lightning… I think. I certified on August 31, 2019 at LDRS 38.

What if any rockets are you working on now?

I’m finishing up the rebuild of my 38mm all carbon fiber minimum diameter scratch build. After that I will start designing my L3 rocket in hopes of completing it and flying it before the end of 2024.

What are your thoughts or goals for the club?

I want to see the club double in size in the next two to three years. I would love to see us serving as a resource for community organizations like scouts for organized launches; I think this will help grow the club. And most importantly, I want to see us with a “local” launch site—something within 20 to 30 miles of OKC were we can meet to fly low and mid power rockets; this more than anything else will ensure our growth and increase our outreach.
